Although a new build, this property has huge emotional resonance. For many years the site of the family bach, the permanent relocation of the owners called for a forever home. The clients were happy to leave the interior design direction to KMD with the one criterion of “I just don’t want gum boots at the front door!” With this amount of creative freedom we worked with the spectacular architectural design from Jon McAlpine to bring together a beautiful cohesive interior. The lines are modern, and a lightness throughout references the coastal location. The kitchen incorporates a large scullery, allowing other elements to shine – the extractor fan for example is covered in one single slab of porcelain. Throughout the home there are aspects which reflect the client’s passions (such as a dedicated train room) – as well as practical considerations. Vast cupboards are concealed; bandsawn textured wide wall lining boards are dual purpose, used to both push up the ceiling height and completely hide storage. Recessed glass doors add a design element while simultaneously enclosing areas for heating purposes, meanwhile the natural light floods throughout. VidaSpace timber flooring has been used along with pure wool carpet; texture is important as is flow – a beautiful natural stone with hues of sea green has been used in the living space, and for a custom-made console in the foyer. Free reign to assist with furniture ensured a wonderful sense of continuity throughout the home.

Katherine McDonald Design was the perfect Interior design person we needed for our new build.
Kath understood our vision we required and came up with the perfect pieces - colours, lighting, tiles, fabrics, furniture etc.
The final look is stylish and we couldn't be happier.
